Cavapoo vs Cockapoo: 4 Important Differences Explained

Cavapoo vs Cockapoo

Cavapoo vs Cockapoo. You can easily get confused as they look so similar but these two mixed breeds are very different in temperament and character.

This website is all about Cavapoos but I like quite a few of the different Poodle mixes with Cockapoos being one of them.

A Cockapoo is a mix between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle whereas a Cavapoo is a mix breed between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle.

Cavapoo vs Cockapoo Size

The first impression is that the Cockapoo is bigger than a Cavapoo.

This is mostly true.

However, keep in mind that some Cavapoos can end up just as tall or even taller than a Cockapoo.

Most of the time, the Cockapoo is only slightly taller than a Cavapoo.

What you can see though in the pictures above, is that the Cockapoo has a longer muzzle.

The average height of a Cockapoo is 10-15 inches (25-38 cm) whereas the average height of a Cavapoo is 9-14 inches (23-35cm) so there is not that much difference between the two.

The average weight of both breeds is very much the same, 12-25 lbs (5-11 kg)

Cavapoo vs Cockapoo Coat

The Cocker Spaniel and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel have very similar coats.

So both the Cockapoo and Cavapoo can either end up with a curly coat like the Poodle or more of a straight wavy coat of a Cocker or Cavalier.

Both mixed breeds can be hypoallergenic depending on which coat they inherit.

If it has more of a Poodle coat then the puppy could be suitable for people allergic to dogs.

Alternatively, if the coat is more straight and wavy then the puppy will not be hypoallergenic.

The coats of both the Cavapoo and the Cockapoo come in a variety of colors.

They can be brown, white, black, tri-color, red, beige, apricot, chocolate, black and white, sable, and merle.

Cavapoo vs Cockapoo Temperament

This is where things get interesting.

Cavapoos tend to be more chilled and laid back than Cockapoos.

A good walk once a day is sufficient for them.

They make great family dogs as they love small children.

Cavapoos create strong bonds with their humans and get very attached to their person.

They are loving and gentle dogs that love to cuddle.

They can be finicky eaters and some owners struggle to find the right food for them.

Cockapoos have never-ending energy and need lots of walks and playtime.

They can be a little crazy.

They also tend to be very needy and they want to be with you all the time, often having separation anxiety issues.

They tend to be more vocal than the Cavapoo but are just as loving and endearing.

They are more suited to an active family that enjoys outdoor activities where their Cockapoo can join in as well.

Cockapoos are also great with children and make fantastic family pets.

Cavapoo vs Cockapoo Health Issues

Both the Cavapoo and Cockapoo are mixed breeds with one parent being a Poodle.

Poodles are generally quite healthy dogs.

The main health concerns lie with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Cocker Spaniel.

Both these breeds have health issues that you need to be aware of.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed suffers from Heart mitral valve disease (MVD), a devastating disease that claims many Cavvie lives.

A Cavapoo can inherit this disease but the risk can be greatly minimized by making sure that you only buy your Cavapoo puppy from a reputable breeder that does all the necessary health checks.

The Cocker Spaniel also has a few health issues with Familial Nephropathy being one of the more serious diseases which affects the kidneys.

They can also suffer from eye problems as well.

The risks are the same as with the Cavapoo. Buying from the right breeder is crucial.

So which mix breed suits you?

If you are looking for an energetic dog that can carry on for hours on end, then a Cockapoo is a great choice.

However, if you would appreciate a more placid dog that needs less exercise and is more of a cuddle bunny, then the Cavapoo is the way to go!

I highly recommend these toys, whether you decide to get a Cavapoo or a Cockapoo as they are suitable for both mix breeds.

Do you want the best food for your new dog, here are my highest recommendations.

  2. Glad I could help :))
I think a Cavapoo would suit you perfectly.
When you do find a breeder then make sure to let them know that you would like a laid back puppy so they can match the right pup to you.
That is more important then color or gender.

  3. I agree with Kathleen’s comments.. me too !,,
So how can I adopt a Cavapoo …adult female 4 yrs. 20-25 lbs

  4. HI There,
I personally do not know of any cavapoos in rescue.
They are not easy to find.
I would suggest doing a search on Facebook for “Cavapoo Rescue” and join a few of those groups.
Also, contact dog rescue organizations near you and let them know to contact you if a cavapoo comes in.
I really hope you find your perfect cavapoo!!

  5. Hi, Ma and my family are looking for a cavapoo.
We came went to see one yesterday. He turned out to be a singleton puppy. Should I have any concern on future behavioural issue that this can cause.
There is a lot on the web and it is a bit confusing.

  6. Hi Maria,
Singleton puppies face a lot of challenges.
Puppies typically learn how to behave from their siblings and being just one puppy he will have missed out on all this interaction.
They also learn crucial social skills from each other.

I am not saying that you should not take this puppy but you need to be aware that he will need a lot more training than puppies from a normal-sized litter.

The first 12 weeks are crucial and he will need a lot of handling and touching and he needs to spend as much time as possible with other similar-aged puppies.
You will need to take him to puppy school as soon as he has had his last vaccinations.
I cannot stress how important this will be. He will interact with other puppies and learn basic obedience and handling.
Arrange lots of puppy playdates so he can learn how to treat other dogs.
Expose him to different situations, people, and animals.
Take him to shops, markets, and parks (Not dog parks) to experience sounds and different environments.
He will need a lot of socialization and that needs to start as quickly as possible.

As long as you do this then he will be just fine.

So, it is a choice you have to make whether you are able and willing to put in the extra work.
If you are then he will grow up to be a balanced and well-behaved dog.

    Hope this helps!!
